Super Bowl week is officially underway in the Bay Area. It formally kicked off with the NFL’s “Super Bowl Opening Night” last night in San Jose. It replaced the old Tuesday morning Media Day that annually took place during Super Bowl week. Players and coaches from the AFC champion Broncos and NFC champion Panthers addressed questions from reporters.
Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning isn’t giving any insight into what his future holds. During “Super Bowl Opening Night”, Manning said he’s only focused on Super Bowl 50. It’s been speculated that Sunday’s game against the Panthers could be the 39-year-old Manning’s last.
A two-time Super Bowl champion is calling it a career. Raiders defensive end Justin Tuck announced yesterday that he is retiring after 11 NFL seasons. The 32-year-old Tuck was a key part of the two most-recent Giants Super Bowl victories.
Another number-one team in college hoops has been taken down. Damion Lee scored 24 points as 18th-ranked Louisville held off top-ranked North Carolina, 71-65. North Carolina’s 12-game winning streak came to an end with its first ACC loss. The number-one team in the “USA Today” Top-25 Coaches’ Poll has been beaten in five of the last six weeks.
Illinois is on the road tomorrow night at Rutgers. The Fighting Illini are coming off consecutive home losses to Ohio State and Wisconsin and are 10-and-12 overall and 2-and-7 in the Big Ten. The Scarlet Knights have lost nine straight games to fall to 6-and-16 and 0-and-9.
The Jazz turned back the Bulls in overtime, 105-96. Jimmy Butler finished with 26 points, seven rebounds and six assists. Pau Gasol collected 19 points and eight rebounds in defeat. Chicago has dropped nine of its last 13. The Bulls face the Kings tomorrow.
