Clemson is number-one in the first College Football Playoff rankings of the season. The 8-and-0 Tigers got the nod over 7-and-0 LSU. Defending national champion Ohio State and 7-and-1 Alabama round out the top four. LSU and Alabama meet in Tuscaloosa on Saturday.
The Hornets notched their first win of the year with a 130-105 blasting of the Bulls in Charlotte. Jimmy Butler poured in 26 points for the Bulls, who dropped to 3-and-2. Doug McDermott scored 17 points, while Derrick Rose had only four points in 24 minutes. The Bulls host the Thunder tomorrow night.
NASCAR has suspended driver Matt Kenseth for intentionally wrecking Joey Logano in last Sunday’s race at Martinsville. NASCAR says Kenseth intentionally altered the outcome of the race and his actions have no place in the sport. Joe Gibbs Racing is appealing the suspension.
The NFL has claimed its second coaching casualty of the season. The Titans have fired head coach Ken Whisenhunt [[ WIZ-en-hunt ]] after a 1-and-6 start to the year. Former Jaguars head coach Mike Mularkey will replace Whisenhunt on an interim basis.
The Cowboys are giving running back Joseph Randle his walking papers. The third-year back has been waived by the Cowboys. Randle was already away from the team to deal with an unspecified personal issue. He recently lost his starting job to Darren McFadden.
Jhonas Enroth stopped all 24 shots he faced as the Kings blanked the Blues, 3-0, in St. Louis. Jake Allen made 31 saves for St. Louis, which had won its previous three. The Blues play the Blackhawks in Chicago tonight.
Dusty Baker is the new manager of the Nationals. The 66-year-old Baker replaces Matt Williams, who was fired after the Nats failed to make the playoffs this past season. Baker has been named Manager of the Year three times in his career.
The Mets didn’t win it all, but they are still rewarding manager Terry Collins for a trip to the World Series. They have agreed to a new two-year contract with the 66-year-old through 2017. Collins just finished his fifth year with the Mets.
