The Royals are World Series champions for the first time in 30 years. Kansas City scored two runs in the ninth and five more in the 12th to pull out a 7-2 win over the Mets in Game Five of the Fall Classic. The Royals clinched their first title since 1985.
Royals catcher Salvador Perez is the Most Valuable Player of the World Series. Perez hit .364 with three runs and an RBI in Kansas City’s five-game win over the Mets. He batted .259 with four homers and eight RBI during the postseason.
Todd Gurley rushed 20 times for 133 yards and a touchdown to lead the Rams to a 27-6 win over the 49ers at the Edward Jones Dome. Tavon Austin added four catches for 98 yards and a score as the Rams won back-to-back games for the first time this season. St. Louis is now 4-and-3. The Rams play this Sunday at Minnesota.
Rams rookie running back Todd Gurley is making NFL history. He has recorded the most rushing yards through his first four starts with 566 than any running back since the AFL-NFL merger in 1970. Gurley has 146, 159, 128 and 133 yards respectively in his last four games against the Cardinals, Browns, Packers and 49ers.
Blair Walsh nailed a game-winning 36-yard field goal as time expired to give the Vikings a 23-20 win over the Bears at Soldier Field. Jay Cutler was 22-of-33 for 211 yards and a score for the Bears, who dropped to 2-and-5. Alshon Jeffrey had 10 catches for 116 yards and a TD in the setback.
C.J. Anderson rushed for 101 yards and a touchdown as the Broncos downed the Packers, 29-10, in a battle of unbeatens in Denver. Peyton Manning threw for 340 yards and an interception for the Broncos, who improved to 7-and-0. The Pack dropped to 6-and-1.
Drew Brees tied an NFL record with seven touchdown passes in the Saints’ 52-49 win over the Giants. Kai Forbath booted a 50-yard field goal as time expired in the third highest-scoring game in NFL history.
The Colts head to Charlotte for a Monday night showdown with the undefeated Panthers at Bank of America Stadium. Indianapolis currently sits atop the AFC South despite only collecting three wins through the first seven weeks of the season. The Colts are coming off back-to-back losses to the Patriots and Saints respectively, giving up a combined 866 total yards. Andrew Luck looks for his first win since missing two weeks with a shoulder injury.
Pau Gasol and Nikola Mirotic [[ MEER-oh-titch ]] scored 16 points apiece to lead the Bulls to a 92-87 win over the Magic at the United Center. Jimmy Butler added 14 points for Chicago, which improved to 3-and-1. The Bulls visit the Hornets tomorrow night.
Jeff Gordon clinched a spot in the Chase championship round by winning the Goody’s Headache Relief Shot 500 at Martinsville Speedway. Gordon led 35 of the 500 laps en route to his 93rd career win. Jamie McMurray, Denny Hamlin, Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Kyle Busch rounded out the top-five.
Longtime Virginia Tech head football coach Frank Beamer will retire at the end of the season. The 69-year-old Beamer has been the head man of the Hokies since 1987. He led VT to the BCS title game in 1999.
