Eric Hosmer’s sac-fly RBI in the bottom of the 14th inning gave the Royals a 5-4 win over the Mets in Game One of the World Series. The marathon lasted just over five hours and tied for the longest game in terms of innings in World Series history. Game Two is tonight at 8:07 p.m. Eastern.
The father of Royals starting pitcher Edinson Volquez passed away prior to last night’s Game One. Royals manager Ned Yost says Volquez wasn’t told about his father’s death before the game at his family’s request. Volquez tossed six innings of three-run ball in a no-decision.
FOX’s broadcast of Game One of the World Series was temporarily interrupted in the fourth inning due to technical difficulties. The network says a power outage inside the broadcast truck caused the interruption. FOX temporarily aired the international feed while the issue was resolved.
Pau Gasol’s block of LeBron James in the closing seconds helped preserve the Bulls’ 97-95 win over the Cavaliers in the season opener for both teams at the United Center. Derrick Rose netted 18 points to help the Bulls get the win in the debut of head coach Fred Hoiberg. The Bulls are right back in action tonight against the Nets in Brooklyn at 6:30.
Jake Allen made 26 saves for his first shutout of the season and sixth of his career, as the Blues blanked the Lightning 2-0 at Scottrade Center. Scott Gomez scored his first goal of the year in the first period, while Troy Brouwer added an empty-netter in the final minute for St. Louis, which has won four straight over Tampa. The Blues host the Anaheim Ducks tomorrow night.
Jason Pierre-Paul is back with the Giants. The team and the defensive end have agreed to a new one-year deal. The 26-year-old hasn’t played since losing part of his thumb and having his right index finger amputated after a July 4th fireworks accident.
College football this weekend has Illinois on the road this Saturday at Penn State. The Illini take on the Nittany Lions Halloween morning at 11 a.m. Illinois has lost two in-a-row to Iowa and Wisconsin to fall to 4-and-3 overall and 1-and-2 in the Big Ten. Penn State is 6-and-2 overall and 3-and-1 in conference play.
