Tom Brady threw for 312 yards and three touchdowns as the Patriots cut down the Colts, 34-27, on “Sunday Night Football”. New England improved to 5-and-0 with the win. The teams were meeting for the first time since last year’s AFC title game sparked the “Deflategate” saga.
Matt Prater’s 27-yard field goal with 2:29 left in overtime gave the Lions a 37-34 win over the Bears in Detroit. Jay Cutler was 26-of-41 for 353 yards, a TD and a pick for the Bears, who dropped to 2-and-4. Alshon Jeffery posted eight grabs for 147 yards and a score in defeat.
Cam Newton’s 26-yard touchdown pass to Greg Olsen with 32 seconds left gave the Panthers a 27-23 win over the Seahawks in Seattle. Newton threw for 269 yards, the TD and two interceptions for Carolina, which improved to 5-and-0.
The Packers, Bengals and Broncos all ran their respective records to 6-and-0 on Sunday. The Packers held off the Chargers, 27-20, in Green Bay. The Bengals beat the Bills, 34-21, in Buffalo, while the Broncos outlasted the Browns in overtime, 26-23, in Cleveland.
The Rams gained ground Sunday without even playing. The Rams were on a bye, but saw division rivals Arizona and Seattle both lose. The Cardinals lost 25-13 at Pittsburgh to fall to 4-and-2, while the Seahawks lost 27-23 at home to Carolina to slip to 2-and-4. The Rams are second in the NFC West at 2-and-3.
The Mets have jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the National League Championship Series. Daniel Murphy hit his fifth homer of the postseason to power the Mets to a 4-1 win over the Cubs in New York. Chicago will host Game Three tomorrow night.
The American League Championship Series shifts to Toronto as the Royals clash with the Blue Jays tonight. Kansas City has a 2-0 lead in the best-of-seven set. First-pitch is at 8:07 p.m. Eastern.
Vladimir Tarasenko found the net twice to lead the Blues to a 4-2 win over the Jets in Winnipeg. His second goal of the night and fifth of the season snapped a 2-all tie midway through the third period as St. Louis won its fourth straight. The Blues are 5-1-and-0 overall. They skate in Montreal tomorrow night.
Joey Logano took the checkered flag at the Hollywood Casino 400 yesterday at Kansas Speedway. Denny Hamlin, Jimmie Johnson, Kasey Kahne and Kyle Busch rounded out the top-five.
