A controversial missed call helped give the Seahawks a 13-10 win over the Lions on “Monday Night Football”. The league says Seattle’s K.J. Wright should have been called for intentionally batting the ball out of the back of the end zone after a Calvin Johnson fumble late in the fourth quarter. Detroit would have had possession at the half-yard line had the call been made.
The Joe Philbin era in Miami is over. The Dolphins have fired Philbin just four games into his fourth season. Tight ends coach Dan Campbell takes over on an interim basis. Miami is off to a 1-and-3 start to the year.
The Indianpolis Colts will likely have their star quarterback on the field Thursday against the Texans. NFL Network reports Luck is expected to play after missing Sunday’s win over the Jaguars with a shoulder injury. Luck reportedly has a subluxation of his throwing shoulder, but there is no structural damage.
Matt Williams is out as manager of the Nationals. The team has fired the 2014 National League Manager of the Year after just two seasons. The Nats missed the playoffs after being a popular pick to win the World Series this year.
The Yankees will make their playoff run without pitcher CC Sabathia. The 35-year-old left-hander has checked himself into an alcohol rehab facility and will not pitch this postseason. Sabathia was 2-and-1 with an ERA under three over his last five starts.
The 2015 MLB playoffs get underway today. The postseason opens with the Yankees hosting the Astros in the American League Wild Card game. The winner will advance to face the Royals in the ALDS. The NL Wild Card game between the Cubs and Pirates is tomorrow.
Illinois will likely be without running back Josh Ferguson for this Saturday’s game at 23rd-ranked Iowa. Interim head coach Bill Cubit says Ferguson is doubtful with a shoulder injury. He was hurt in the first quarter of Saturday’s win over Nebraska. Illinois is 4-and-1, while Iowa is 5-and-0.
