Pass rusher Jared Allen is going from worst to first. The Bears have traded the veteran defensive end to the Panthers in exchange for a sixth-round draft pick. Allen has no sacks through three games this season, but is the NFL’s active sack leader with 134.
The Jared Allen trade wasn’t the only deal the Bears made on Monday. ESPN reportsChicagohas shipped linebacker Jon Bostic to the Patriots in exchange for a sixth-round pick. Bostic did not appear in any ofChicago’s three games this season.
Matt Carpenter scored on an error in the ninth inning to break a scoreless tie, as the Cardinals went on to beat the Pirates 3-0 in the opener of a huge three-game series at PNC Park. Mark Reynolds added a two-run homer in the ninth for St. Louis, which moved four games ahead of Pittsburghfor first place in the NL Central. Jonathan Broxton picked up the win and Trevor Rosenthal posted his 48th save.
Cardinals rookie Stephen Piscotty is hospitalized overnight following an outfield collision in last night’s 3-0 win over the Pirates. Piscotty was carted off the field and diagnosed with a bruised head after colliding with Peter Bourjos [[ BORE-juss]].
Chris Denorfia’s pinch-hit solo homer in the bottom of the 11th gave the Cubs a 1-0 win over the Royals at Wrigley Field. Denorfia drilled the first pitch he saw off Miguel Almonte leading off the 11th. Kyle Hendricks struck out nine of six innings of two-hit ball. Fernando Rodney earned the win. The Cubs are three-and-a-half games behind the Pirates for the top NL Wild Card spot. The contest was a makeup game for a May rainout.
The White Sox open their final homestand of the season with the first of three against the Royals tonight. Jeff Samardzija [[ suh-MAR-juh ]] will be on the hill for the Sox. KC will counter with Johnny Cueto. First-pitch is at 7:10.
The defending World Series champion Giants avoided playoff elimination with a 3-2, 12-inning win over the Dodgers. Los Angeleshas dropped four in-a-row, but can still clinch the NL West title with a win over the Giants tonight.
Closer Jonathan Papelbon won’t suit up for the Nationals again this season. The Nats have suspended Papelbon four games for choking teammate Bryce Harper on Sunday. Papelbon began an MLB-imposed three-game suspension for a separate incident yesterday.
