Lance Lynn got rocked for six runs in two-and-a-third innings as the Cardinals got crushed by the Cubs, 9-0, at Busch Stadium. Lynn slipped to 11-and-9 with the loss for the Cards, who have dropped four of five. Jason Heyward and Yadier Molina combined for four of the team’s seven hits in a losing effort.
Ryan Raburn clubbed his second solo home run in the sixth inning to give the Indians the lead and eventual 3-2 win over the White Sox at U.S. Cellular Field. Chris Sale racked up eight strikeouts in seven frames, but gave up all three runs to dip to 12-and-8. Carlos Sanchez and Tyler Flowers each drove in a run as Chicago had its four-game winning streak snapped.
Top-ranked Ohio State used a big second half to pull away for a 42-24 win over Virginia Tech. Cardale Jones got the start at quarterback and threw for 186 yards, two touchdowns and an interception. Ohio State outscored VT 28-7 in the second half after trailing 17-14 at halftime.
Notre Dame will be without running back Tarean Folston for the rest of the season. Folston suffered a torn ACL in Saturday’s season-opening win over Texas. Folston led the Irish with 889 rushing yards last season.
The preseason is over and the Rams are ready to start playing for real. They host the two-time defending NFC champion Seahawks this Sunday at the Edward Jones Dome, with kick-off at noon. Rickie Fowler rallied from two strokes down with five holes to play to claim victory at the Deutsche Bank Championship. Fowler shot a three-under 68 on the day to finish minus-15 at TPC Boston. Henrik Stenson took home second place at minus-14 after entering the day with a one-stroke lead over Fowler.
